On 5 June 1942, Doreston Luke Carmen of Galveston, Texas was the first recruit to enter the segregated training facility at Camp Robert Smalls. In September 1942, segregated "Negro Service Schools" were opened. WebBuilt in 1896, it was one of the last operating steam tugboats on the Great Lakes and is on the National Register of Historic Places . Steam tug Ned Hanlan (Toronto) The steam tug Ned Hanlan has been preserved ashore as a static display on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition.
