As part of the digestive system, the large intestine helps move poop (stool) out of the body. When you have a colostomy, stool exits the body through the stoma instead of the rectum. WebDepending on the type of system, the ostomy appliance can last from four to seven days, but the pouch must be changed if there is leaking, odor, excessive skin exposure, or itching or burning under the skin barrier.
